UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Kasbah of Algiers
is one of the finest coastal sites on the Mediterranean, overlooking the islands where a Carthaginian trading-post was established in the 4th century BC. There are the remains of the citadel, old mosques and Ottoman-style palaces as well as the remains of a traditional urban structure associated with a deep-rooted sense of community.
Djémila (Cuicul)
Remains of an establishment of an ancient Roman colony with its forum, temples, basilicas, triumphal arches and houses occupied a singular defensive position 900 m above sea-level.
Tassili n’Ajjer
The strange lunar landscape of ‘rock forests’ of Tassili n’Ajjer, a vast plateau in south-east Algeria at the borders of Libya, Niger and Mali, has an exceptional density of paintings and engravings, and many other prehistoric vestiges. More than 15,000 drawings and engravings record the climatic changes, the animal migrations and the evolution of human life on the edge of the Sahara from 6000 BC to the first centuries of the present era.
Timgad (Colonia Marciana Traiana Thamugadi)
The Roman military colony north of the Aurès of the massif was founded in 100 A.D. by Trajan. The colony was a “planned city” built out of nothing (ex nihilo), with crosswise aligned streets (cardo and decumanus), Roman urban planning at its height.
