Visit and learn about Burundi, officially the Republic of Burundi, earned it independence July 1, 1962. It is a landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Its capital and largest city is Bujumbura. Although the country is landlocked, much of the southwestern border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika.
The Twa, Hutu and Tutsi peoples have lived here for at least five hundred years, and for over two hundred years, Burundi was ruled as a kingdom. The official languages are English, French and Kirundi. Burundi’s motto in Kirundi is “Ubumwe, Ibikorwa, Amajambere”, or “Unity, Work, Progress” in English. Burundi’s culture is based on local tradition and the influence of neighboring countries. Drumming and story telling are major parts of Burundi tradition. Farming is the main industry and typical meals are sweet potatoes, corn and peas.
